Coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea. They are among the richest ecosystems on Earth, supporting an extraordinary variety of marine life. Fish, sea turtles, crustaceans, and countless other species rely on reefs for shelter, food, and breeding grounds. In many ways, reefs are nurseries of the ocean: places where life begins and thrives.

They also help protect coastlines by softening the force of waves and storms, and they support local communities through fisheries and tourism. More broadly, the ocean plays a vital role in regulating the planet and producing much of the air we breathe. Coral reefs are part of that living balance.

What makes them even more remarkable is how much there is still left to discover. The ocean holds worlds we are only beginning to understand, and coral ecosystems continue to reveal new species and fragile interconnections.

Today, however, reefs are under growing pressure. One of the most visible signs is coral bleaching. Corals live in partnership with tiny algae that give them color and provide essential energy. When seawater becomes too warm, corals expel these algae and turn white. This is called bleaching. A bleached coral can sometimes recover, but if the stress lasts too long, it may die.

Rising sea temperatures, pollution, and other environmental pressures are putting reefs at risk. But action still matters. Reef restoration, marine protection, less pollution, more responsible choices, and stronger climate action can all help protect these underwater ecosystems for the future.

For all of us who love the sea, reefs are more than beautiful. They are living, fragile worlds worth protecting.
